As a community legal centre, Consumer Action provides free legal advice and pursues litigation on behalf of vulnerable and disadvantaged consumers across Victoria, and is the largest specialist consumer legal practice in Australia. As a nationally recognised and influential policy and research body, Consumer Action pursues a law reform agenda across a range of important consumer issues at a governmental level, in the media, and throughout the community directly.
We currently offer PLT placements and a media/communications volunteer program. Due to capacity constraints, we are unable to offer a general volunteering program at this time.

Practical Legal Training (PLT) placements will undertake tasks for both the legal and policy practices within Consumer Action.
You will have the opportunity to participate in:
- legal and policy research;
- drafting legal correspondence and court documents;
- assisting in client interviews;
- filing and file summaries; and
- administrative work.
Please note that PLT placements are unpaid positions. Consumer Action’s office is located in central Melbourne. Applications will be assessed on a demonstrated interest in, and commitment to, consumer law and social justice.
Want to do your PLT at Consumer Action?
To be eligible for a PLT position, you must:
- have enrolled in the College of Law, or its equivalent at a participating university;
- be able to work at least 4 days a week; and
- undertake a minimum of 50 days of practical legal training at Consumer Action.

- What supervision is provided?
PLTs and volunteers work with solicitors and policy workers on a task by task basis. Your work will be supervised by experienced lawyers under the direction of our Director of Legal Practice, and by experienced policy officers. All our solicitors are friendly, knowledgeable and willing to work with you. Before undertaking a task, students are briefed on the background and purpose of the task and what is expected of them
- What training can I expect?
Initial training and induction is provided, and will include:
- an induction to Consumer Action’s office systems and procedures and an introduction to staff; and
- an introduction to consumer protection legislation and sources of information.
We assume that placements already have the necessary legal research skills to undertake legal and policy research and we do not provide training in this.
- Can I choose the days that I come in on a week by week basis?
Due to limited space and resources, placements must commit to coming in on set days each week.
- Can my PLT placement occur over fewer days for a longer period?
For PLTs, we strongly prefer a minimum of 4 days per week unless there is a compelling reason you cannot commit to this time, for example family caring arrangements.
