Treaty welcomed as Victoria takes huge step towards meaningful reconciliation
Consumer Action Law Centre has welcomed the tabling of the Treaty Bill in the Victorian Parliament yesterday.
“Consumer Action celebrates this historic milestone with our First Nations colleagues, and we congratulate the Allan Government for taking this huge step towards meaningful reconciliation,” said CEO Stephanie Tonkin.
Treaty within the state of Victoria will ensure First Nations peoples are consulted in the legislative changes that impact them, determine First Nations own affairs and see ‘truth telling’ embedded into the school curriculum which will be a game changer in ensuring future generations learn the full truth of Australia’s colonial settlement Ms Tonkin said.
“We stand with our sector and First Nations colleagues, employees and the broader community in calling for this critical legislation to be passed – Treaty Now!“ she added.
“What a brilliant and positive contrast to last week’s appalling desecration of a sacred site and attack on Camp Sovereignty. Only truth telling and a commitment to working together for a better future for us all will create a better Victoria and a better Australia,” Ms Tonkin said.
