Standing up against systemic racism

Consumer Action Law Centre stands in solidarity with all those protesting systemic racism over recent months.

Our colleagues at Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) have issued a statement regarding Aboriginal deaths in custody and the recent protests. We support VALS asserting the importance of having a national conversation about the fair and just treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, particularly in relation to the justice system.

Community Legal Centres Australia (CLCA), the peak body for community legal centres nationally, also released a statement calling for justice for First Nations people.

Consumer Action’s Reconciliation Working Group supports and enables Consumer Action’s commitments to Aboriginal communities. These include commitments to recognise rights of self-determination, work with Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations, deliver culturally appropriate services, and support Aboriginal peoples to advocate on consumer issues. More information about the Working Group and Consumer Action’s commitments can be found here.

Consumer Action partners with VALS to address unmet consumer credit and debt legal need in Victorian Aboriginal communities. The latest report from our partnership can be found here.
