Energy price hikes a further blow to families during cost-of-living crisis
Energy price hikes announced today of more than 30 per cent in the Victorian Default Offer (VDO) draft determination, are yet another blow to families during the worst cost of-living crisis in a generation, says Stephanie Tonkin, CEO of Consumer Action.
“The Victorian Default Offer (VDO) draft determination is slated to increase by 31% and that means the average Victorian family will be paying hundreds of dollars more for their electricity bill in 2023-24.
“At a time when the price of food, housing and utilities is increasing I am really concerned the people who have least will feel the impact of energy price increases most.”
Ms Tonkin said that consumers should shop around for the best price for energy as they could make significant savings depending on the retailer chosen.
“There is help available with your bills, people need to know they are not alone in this crisis.
“I urge people to call the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007 and speak to one of our financial counsellors who can give you information on hardship options available such as utility relief grants which allow for up to $650 for each utility including water,” she said.
