Our impact in 2024-25: Fighting injustice and working for a fairer marketplace

We are delighted to present our Impact Report 2024-25 which highlights Consumer Action Law centre’s work over the past year working with consumers, community workers, national advocates and cross-sector stakeholders.

Overall, cost-of-living issues continued to take centre-stage with mortgage stress, credit card and tax debt among the top five presenting issues from callers to our financial counsellors on the National Debt Helpline.

Read about the successes we had; fighting the injustice of harmful scams and the progress made with the first ever designated complaint against dodgy unsolicited sales and lead generation. With our sector colleagues, we finally got legislation to protect Buy Now Pay Later and telco customers doing it tough, and our First Nations authored report, Money Yarns, Stronger Futures, made waves with groundbreaking research and proposals.

At Consumer Action, we strived to improve our training services and internal processes. Read about the worked we did to strengthen and embed cultural safety.

Today, Consumer Action holds it Annual General Meeting (AGM) and David Berry, our Chair since 2021, is handing over the role to CALC Board member and CEO/Managing Director of Thriving Communities Australia, Ciara Sterling.

“I am thrilled and honoured to be taking on the role of Chair of Consumer Action Law Centre,” Ciara said.

“CALC has a proud legacy of driving systemic reform, strengthening consumer protections, amplifying people’s voices and ensuring people are treated fairly and systems are held accountable. I want to acknowledge the outstanding leadership David Berry has provided as Chair, and I’m grateful he will continue on the Board to contribute his invaluable insights.

“Steph and the CALC team do exceptional work every day to support people and influence change. With a career focused on strengthening equity, safety and inclusion for people experiencing vulnerability, I’m excited to continue working with the Board, Steph and the team to guide CALC’s next chapter of impact and meaningful reform for consumers.”
