Energy efficiency and targeted rebate plan to help with big energy bills the right approach
Consumer Action Law Centre has welcomed the Victorian Government’s announcement today to help thousands of concession holders manage their energy bills.
For many people in our community, home energy costs—made worse by the COVID pandemic—are simply unaffordable, and targeted rebates are one way to help manage these costs.
“Every day our financial counsellors are speaking to individuals and families who are struggling to cover their energy bills and other living costs,” said Gerard Brody, CEO of Consumer Action.
“Energy consumption has been even higher this year with many of us spending more time in our homes as a result of the COVID-19 lockdowns. It is vital that this rebate is easy to access so it will help people manage their costs,” said Brody.
“We also welcome new minimum efficiency standards for rentals and the significant investment in energy efficiency for low-income and social housing. We look forward to working with the Government on the roll out of this important program.
“Many of us in Victoria have been hard hit by COVID-19 lockdowns this year and spent increased time in our homes. As summers get longer and hotter due to climate change, ensuring our homes are energy efficient, safe, healthy and affordable has never been more evident,” Brody concluded.
