Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation and Finance Sector – Submission on Module 6 on insurance

Consumer Action made a submission to the Financial Services Royal Commission in October 2018 on the policy questions arising from Module 6 on insurance.

Consumer Action has assisted people who have been denied insurance cover, who have bought unsuitable insurance or who have claims disputes with insurers. We most commonly assist with disputes about car insurance, add-on insurance, home insurance and life insurance.

Consumer Action provided legal advice and support to Reverend Bruce Grant Stewart, who gave evidence during Module 6 in relation to his experiences dealing with Freedom Insurance. Our submission on the Module 6 Case Studies is available here: https://policy.consumeraction.org.au/2018/10/01/royal-commission-round-6-hearings-case-studies/

This submission responds to the key policy questions posed by the Commission in Module 6, including on:

  • Product design
  • Disclosure
  • Add-on insurance
  • Claims-handling
  • Insurance in superannuation
  • Scope of the Insurance Contracts Act
  • Regulation
