Robodebt Royal Commission: refer debt collection misconduct to the ACCC
Consumer Action has partnered with Financial Counselling Australia and Economic Justice Australia to make a submission to the Royal Commission into the Robodebt Scheme.
The submission asks the Royal Commission to consider a formal referral of third-party debt collectors to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission for investigation as to whether they have breached the Australian Consumer Law (ACL). We suggest that the evidence presented to the Royal Commission demonstrates breaches of the ACL.
The submission also makes brief recommendations about reforms to the rules that apply to debt collection conduct by Australian Government instrumentalities.
